Freiberg is a relatively small city with approximately 46.000 inhabitants. It is a city in Saxony, founded in 1186 as the centre of the mining industry in the Ore mountains. It has been that way for centuries. All through the city you’ll find monuments of medieval mining and metallurgy. There’s also the mining museum, the mineralogical collection of the mining academy or the mine "Alte Elizabeth" to visit. A symbol of the history of mining is the Freiberg University of Mining and technology, established in 1765. This university is the oldest university in the world. Another remarkable feature is the Freiberg cathedral containing Gottfried Silbermann organ.
